Is Indian Politics Getting A Shade Fairer?

The 61 female members in the 15th Lok Sabha were high on hope and here we are! With the highest majority of women MP’s since independence. A majority of these MPs (23) belong to Congress. The BJP has contributed 13 women to the House. Uttar Pradesh has sent more women to parliament – 13 – than any Indian state and West Bengal is in second place with seven women MPs.

With one-tenth of our Lok Sabha members now women, India is closely in the bracket of developed nations such as the UK (19.3%), US (16.3%), Italy (16.1%), Ireland (14.2%) and France (13.9%) but still the position of women in Indian society is drastically different from that in the West.

The number of women MPs may having reached the high mark for the first time it is high time and high expectations whether the pending women’s reservation bill will be passed? What fruits will the overall change yield? Unlike their male counterparts taking their place in parliament, will they really do anything for women.

It shows a change in the mindset of the parties who are now giving more tickets to women MPs. Along with power, comes responsibility . There are high hopes of the new women parliamentarians.

Is Indian Politics Getting A Shade Fairer?

As was reported in a national daily paper,
Why? Are women MPs any different from men? Do they have a different agenda ? Of course, says 27-yearold Agatha Sangma, an MP from Tura in Meghalaya and one of the youngest members of the 15th Lok Sabha. She says that financial independence is the most important issue for Indian women and women MPs should get together to help enact gender-sensitive legislation.

The lowest percentage of women representations was in the sixth Lok Sabha (1977-80) when there were only 3.8 percent women MPs. The first Lok Sabha (1952-57) had 4.4 percent women MPs. In the 13th Lok Sabha (1999-2004), the figure was 9.2 percent, the research group said. But this time, women over 60 make a 13.80 percent, while it was a mere 9.8 percent in the 14th Lok Sabha. The reservation bill, which seeks to reserve 33% of all legislature seats for women, was first introduced in parliament 13 years ago. With the continuous struggle to get through the desired wishes of the bill to be fulfilled, we the people await for the new women parliamentarians to focus on each and every issues that is directly related to enhancing the lives of less privileged women in our country.

Not only that there are many more tasks in general to be seen through. Hope for the best from the best!

That a patriarchal state like Uttar Pradesh sent the largest number of women to parliament is interesting indeed.

Hi Julita,
You are doing masters in Journalism. But you have not noticed that most of the MPs from Congress or BJP are those from DYNASTY of politicians of yore like Ghani khan choudhry,Sangma,Dutt,Mirdha,Choudhry, etc etc.
The only party which has sent lady MPs who represent the downtrodden is BSP whose two Muslim Lady MPs have only studied upto 8th standard.I hope you will give credit to Mayawathi for this

BJP and Congress are promoting the politics of dynasties in India. Maximum young MPs of BJP and Congress belong to the families of stalwart leaders of these parties. Gandhi, Syndia, Pilot, Hudda, Jyoti Mirdha, Jitin Prasad the son of Jitendra prasad, a veteran Congress leader, Priya dutt , is the daughter of Great leader Sunil dutt, Arun yadav , ( Khandwa) who is the son of Subhashchandra yadav, former Vice president of congress party in Madhya Pradesh, Jagan Mohan, YSR's son became a first-time MP from Kadapa, Milind Deora, Mumbai South: The 33-year-old Boston educated son of outgoing petroleum minister Murli Deora, ausam noor who won from Malda belong to famous Gani khan chaoudhary family, Ravneet singh ( Anand pur sahib) is grandson of former chief minister Beant Singh, Navin Jindal from Kurukshetra: The son of industrialist O P Jindal, Deepender Hooda Rohtak: The son of CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda.

Same is the case with BJP but Congress is responsible for this culture.

@Salil

Well said.A true leader must be aware of the ground realities and be in touch with lives of common man.Unfortunately, these young ”Raiszadehs” are making mockery of Indian politics.

Indian political landscape is functioning on par with trend patterns in Bollywood where unqualified sons and daughters of yesteryear superstars get an opportunity to work in so many movies whereas the real talent gets reduced to nothingness.

It’s like ” ANDHER NAGRI CHAUPAT RAJA” !!

Don’t forget that UP is the largest state of India. There is nothing to appreciate if more women MPs belong to UP.

Dear Julita
Don’t be in illusion that male dominance in politics will come to an end so easily. It will take long- long time and whenever men will find their hegemony at stake, they will object.

No doubt BSP is giving representation to the down trodden sections of the society and we should appreciate it but we can’t forget that BSP is doing caste based politics.

Hi Nitesh,
Those two lady MPs are MUSLIMS AND 8TH PASS. wHAT CASTE YOU ARRE TALKING ABOUT.?
BSP is dalit dominated. I agree. But when Yediurappa uses Lingayats or Gowda uses Okkaligas or Congress has been using throughout then it is not caste based!!!!!!!!!

This is actually a proud moment when women have achieved one tenth positions in political structure and now the time has come when these women work for the others and make them self dependent.

Hi Salil,
You have given the list of Dynasties who are ruling us by keeping people ignorant ( for example in Karnataka the dalits are demanding English medium but the forward castes who have been dominating the state will not allow it in the guise of kannada pride!!!! though their own children study in English medium convents!!!)Ditto with Mulayam who didnot want computers. But atleast mayawathi is giving MP seats to 8th pass Muslim women insttead of TV sets. these women are going to change the face of Muslim women in UP in future by not wearing Big bindies like Brinda Karat or Sushma swaraj, they are going to wear gaudi slawar kameez or full hijab!!!!
